Your Personal Injury Checklist

Posted in Uncategorized

No one ever expects to get injured, which can lead to problems when an injury does happen. It is in your best interest to have a plan in place in case of emergency, as a personal injury attorney would recommend. Below, our friends from Foster Law share a simple checklist for you, should you ever find yourself in an accident:

  • Health First

When you are unexpectedly injured it is important to have qualified health care professionals evaluate your physical and emotional needs and develop a treatment plan. Early diagnosis and treatment will not only help you heal more quickly but is an important first step in seeking the full measure of damages for your injuries. When in doubt about whether you should seek medical care, err on the side of caution and go get an evaluation. Get the medical help you need as quickly as possible. The emergency department oftentimes is the safest and fastest way to ensure you have not suffered a debilitating injury that requires immediate care. An ambulance from the scene of the injury is always a safe option. If you have suffered injuries that impact your ability to get medical care, it is important to ask for help.

  • Document The Event

Make sure you report your injury to the appropriate authorities. Law enforcement may need your statement for official accident reports. Emergency medical personnel and doctors will need to know how you were injured. Get as much information as possible about the event such as: names and contact information of witnesses; insurance agent or insurance company contact information and if possible photographs of the scene of the injury and the injuries. Prepare a written statement for your attorney – Most memories (even the most traumatic ones) tend to fade with time. A written statement or journal for your lawyer will be helpful since it may take longer than you would anticipate to get the claim resolved either through negotiation or trial.

  • Hire A Well-Qualified Personal Injury Lawyer

After suffering an injury, many people will need help managing their legal claims. There are many good lawyers with similar levels of legal skill. However, personalities and styles of representation can be very different. The best results are often reached when the client and their lawyer have a good working relationship. Take the time to select a lawyer you communicate well with and will be accessible to you.  Do not be shy or afraid to ask the lawyer what type of experience they have had with your type of case. Ask when the last time he or she tried a case in front of a jury and what was the verdict? Many cases are resolved without the need for a trial but if they do not settle, they must be tried and you want a skilled trial lawyer in your corner ready for that contingency.

These three steps consist of a simple checklist that you can keep in mind should you ever experience an injury. Remember to seek medical help, document the scene, and consult with an attorney near you for help.
